Joint venture project with MSF to combat HIV/AIDS (from Ibis Africa News no. 13, March 2004)

Ibis has made a proposal for a joint venture project in cooperation with MSF Luxembourg (Médecins Sans Frontières), MSF Switzerland and Douleurs Sans Frontières France in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Tete.

While MSF counsel and test people for HIV/AIDS and supply medical care and anti-retroviral medicine to the sick, Ibis will capacity build four support groups for people living with HIV/AIDS and the association Viveremos.

It's a three year project, which is being considered by Ibis' South Committee. Ibis Mozambique has applied for 500.000 US$ (app. 3 mio. kroner) from the Danish Embassy in Maputo.

The project proposal consists of four components: Capacity building and organisational development of the support groups and Viveremos. Qualitative increase of their activities. Strengthening their network with the civil society. And creating income generating activities and microprojects.

Some of the support groups are badly organised. They lack clear objectives, and their meetings are sometimes chaotic. This is a problem for the Kudumba Support Group, which meets every Friday at the Alto Mae Health Centre in Maputo, where MSF Switzerland runs a day hospital.

Another group Tinhemha, meets weekly at MSF Luxembourgs day hospital in Maputo. Tinhemhas members want to fight discrimination against HIV-positive, help orphans and make home based care etc. But they lack concrete plans.

The Kuvumbana Association in the town of Xai Xai is better organised. 30 activists make home based care and visits and help hundreds of orphans with food and getting access to school. But Kuvumbana wants to strengthen and expand its activities.

The fourth support group, Chiguirizano Association, in Tete, has visited barracks, prisons and companies and talked about living positively with HIV/AIDS. But apart from that the group is loosely organised.

Viveremos is a group of youth in Tete, which has been inspired by MSF' Information, Education and Communication programme. Now they seek to form an association, which will specialise in information and education activities about HIV/AIDS./tgn
